Obtaining Medical Aid Not Always Easy

The early bird gets the worm – Even in Honduras! It’s 5:00 am and people are starting to line up outside the clinic because they know that it is first come, first served. It is a “gringo” clinic so people assume it’s good. Our administrative aide, Heydy, does the initial screening and triage on patients. Living in the Trenches of Poverty

People line up outside the clinic gate starting at 5:00 am. At 7:00 am Heydy our administrative assistant arrives, starts the interview process to qualify and triage the patients. A guard on the premises opens the clinic at 8:00 am and closes the gates at noon, during which time the doctor tries to see as many patients as possible. Trudging Through the 'Burbs - or Should We Say Barrios?

An eight member team from Manos Amigos went into the 21 Barrios (wards or districts) of La Entrada, going house-to-house to prepare an Enquery or Survey Report identifying the poorest families. The “poorest” of the poor, totaling 637 families, were given special cards to gain access to our medical clinic whenever a family member is sick and needs medical attention.   • Clinic nears 25,000 mark in treating patients during first 3 years of serving people in La Entrada
  • Well drilling completed on new clinic site
  • Eagle Scout project collected more than $15,000 worth of over-the-counter medications
  • Audiometer donated, which will speed up examinations, enabling patients to qualify for hearing aids
  • ASIDE, the Association for Ecological and Social Economic Development, signed cooperative agreement with Manos Amigas to supply food, bedding and medical supplies
  • Finland's Project Norte partnered with Manos Amigas by providing funds for well construction, waste water disposal and environmental preservation of new clinic site
  • First micro-enterprise development project receives grant to test market "high-end" fabric products sewn in Honduras for sale in US with portion of profits to support the clinic
