Rotary Seeks to Equip New Clinic Blood Laboratory
Just before Easter, a team of 10 people, including six members from the Rotary Club of West Chester, PA accompanied by friends, and Board Members of SATC traveled to Honduras for an eight day trip to La Entrada and select areas of the Copan. Traveling on a Volunteer Service Grant, this was Rotary’s opportunity to carry out a planning mission and to conduct a site inspection and needs assessment of the Manos Amigas Clinic.
Rotary has pledged to purchase equipment for the analytical blood laboratory at the new clinic. This trip was also the opportunity to meet and get acquainted with members of the Rotary chapter from Santa Rosa who will be their Honduran partnering club. Pins and banners were exchanged and papers were signed outlining the cooperative agreement between the two Rotary Clubs for an international effort in supporting the work of the La Entrada clinic.
To give the West Chester Club an opportunity to experience Honduras and to see examples of the best medical facilities and those struggling to offer health care services, visits were arranged to clinics, hospitals and laboratories within a 2.5 hour drive of La Entrada. These visits created a basis of comparison between “what is” and ”what could be” practical for La Entrada if similar conditions were to prevail in the community. In addition, Rotary was able to tour the country’s largest bakery and to meet with the Chamber of Commerce for a feeling of what working and living conditions are like in the local area.
There was little doubt that after such a rigorous and emotionally challenging tour, the needs were readily discernible and the Rotary members came back emotionally enlightened and physically drained. This feeling persisted for less than 24 hours, because the following day, phones began to ring and reports where starting to take shape for the next steps in bringing about positive changes for the people of La Entrada.
