Our Projects

Phase II

Plans for this phase call for the construction of a new clinic, housing both medical and dental facilities, continue to undergo minor revision, as some thought is being given to making the facility more comprehensive than originally envisioned. We are fortunate to have the ability to do so, if we elect to make such changes, because we have a flexible design plan and space that would allow for opportunistic expansion.

The timeline for Phase II has slipped somewhat. Although the architects have been busy, there are many details that had to be agreed upon first, including identifying project obstacles, costs, qualifying engineering firms and site contractors who can provide assurance for quality work and gaining a level of confidence on behalf of all parties involved. The completion of the new facility is now slated for 2008 - 2009.

We have been expansive with our plans and aggressive with the timetable, but the reality is that accomplishment will come in small increments. We recognize that as “North Americans” we are blessed with technological tools and bountiful pocketbooks. But with those gifts comes anticipation, schedules and the expectation that all we simply have to do is push a button or make the appropriate cell phone call to make things happen. In remaining respectful of another’s culture, we recognize that there are events and things that can’t be rushed. Besides the inevitable language barriers and understanding the true meaning of words and accompanying statements that are intended to provide clarity, there are legalities, completion, filing and certification of official documents, adherence to administrative procedural processes, transport, storage and security issues that must be addressed as part of the protocol for “making progress.” In the interim, we have made significant gains in our networking, keeping commitments, building trust and finally gaining acceptance of SATC members as part of the extended “Honduran family.”

Phase I

April 2005. The initial supply of medications from SATC has been shipped to Honduras in anticipation of the opening of the first phase of clinic operations. Four large parcels containing….left the US in February and acknowledgement has been received that the containers arrived in perfect condition. The materials have been inventoried and await the arrival of the first patients requiring treatment when the clinic becomes operational within the next few weeks.

Preparations have been underway for some time now, but the dream of having a fully staffed and functioning medical clinic, complete with medications is about to become reality. The word is already out on the street that a new medical clinic has arrived in their community and there is an air of anticipation, not only from residents but also from local officials and even the Ministry of Health.

Local doctors have met numerous times to work on details with Manos Amigas as to how they will utilize the clinic. When the doors swing open in the next few days, a physician, pharmacist, administrator and security guard will be on duty to serve the needs of their neighbors.

The first few weeks will prove to be an operational test for the clinic. It will provide us with an early indication of patient load and an understanding of the breadth and types of cases presenting themselves for treatment. SATC will then be in a better position to re-supply the clinic in a timely fashion with first aid consumables and quantities of medications most appropriate to the range of maladies encountered.
