They had been at the clinic in September of 2024 and couldn’t wait to come back. The 27-member team performed 38 surgeries at Manos Amigas and offered primary care for 440 adults and children at the village of Lorena, partnering with Summit in Honduras. Team members came from UCLA Health and Columbia University. This brigade was dedicated to the memory of Dr. Jarrod Kaufman who passed away suddenly in January. At the time, we were working with Jarrod in planning this brigade. We are grateful that Dr. David Chen, Dr. Yuri Novitsky, and Dr. Justin Wagner of Hernia Help, along with Jarrod’s wife Rachael, stepped in to continue Jarrod’s efforts. Essentially the laser makes an opening in the posterior capsule of the lens allowing light to pass through to the retina. This instrument gives the clinic many more options for procedures. It is helpful in reducing fuzziness or clouding of a membrane in the back part of the eye which sometimes results in patients seeing halos around lighted objects like traffic signals or streetlights. The laser is used in the treatment for capsule thickening and helps address wrinkling in the lens capsule. He knew that one doctor could not see all of those patients in a single day. So, Jesus went to the clinic each morning before opening his private practice to help the clinic physician. He triaged, treated and instructed patients on health matters and would not take a lempira for his efforts. He was our first true volunteer. You Decide - Make it stand out Angel #2 By 2005, we were talking about expanding the clinic and adding dentistry. God sent us not just another angel, but also a message. We met our second guardian angel—a wealthy lady in Kansas City who wished to remain anonymous. She was trying to buy the Kansas City A’s baseball team at the time, but we did not know that. She looked at our “back of the envelope” drawing for a clinic and said, “Boys, you are thinking too small….think bigger!” On the way back to the airport she wrote $100,000 on a napkin, handed it to Bob saying, “This is what I am going to do for you, but first you must raise $100,000.” Over the next year we did that. She then told us she as going to give us another $100,000. Now we were excited; we had $300,000! With that money we expected to buy land and build a new clinic in Honduras. We told everyone we knew back home—neighbors, churches, friends. You Decide - Angel #3 The miracle of manna, or heavenly bread, descended on the children of Israel during their exodus in the desert. Our manna came from a local baker in La Entrada. As it turned out, Don Amancio became our third angel. His company, La Popular, is the largest employer in the region. He was a busy man and we waited almost 2 years for a meeting with him. He spoke no English, so we communicated our plans through his secretary / interpreter. Don Amancio said, “I’ve been wanting to do what you’re proposing. I just didn’t know how to do it.” He believed God had sent us to him and told us that he would help us anyway we needed. That kind of commitment was life changing for me. Claudia Guzman “I was born and raised in Tegucigalpa. and graduated from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras (UNAH) medical school in Tegucigalpa. I did my rotating internship at the Mario Catarino Rivas Hospital in San Pedro Sula and went (against my will) to El Cedral, Nueva Arcadia, Copán for my year of social service. I got to know Copán better and now I don't want to leave. I like reading, music, traveling, art, and getting to know other cultures. However, so far that has been only within the country. We hope that will change soon.
